The Capillary Condensation Flow Porometer from PMI is a unique instrument which allows pore size, gas permeability and flow rate to be measured without subjecting samples to the potentially harmful effects of high pressures, extreme temperatures or toxic substances.

For this reason, it is particularly useful in sectors such as biotechnology, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, filtration, food, beverages and environmental research. It can be safely used for characterisation of a wide range of fragile porous membrane samples with very small pores (nanopores).

Its operation involves passing vapour through a chamber containing the sample. The vapour’s pressure is increased until it starts to condense in some of the pores and stops the vapour from flowing through them. The pressure at which this happens is used to calculate pore size. Pore distribution is computed from measurement of the vapour flow rate resulting from application of a small pressure gradient.

Pore size can be measured within a range from 0.2 to 0.0005 µm. Pressure used is just 15 psi. A resolution of 1 in 60,000 is possible and the instrument’s accuracy is 0.15% of the reading. Standard power requirements are 110/220 Vac, 50/60 Hz, but alternatives are available if needed.

The instrument is user friendly and its fully automated design requires very little involvement from the operator. The results it produces are highly reproducible as well as accurate. Usually there is no need for liquid nitrogen temperatures. This, together with the very small pressure required, ensures that even the most sensitive samples will not be harmed.

The absence of mercury and other toxic materials not only safeguards the sample but protects the operator and avoids the need for costly disposal of hazardous waste.
